7:30 p.m. Opening Keynote Address by Terry Gips, Sustainable Associates

"The Natural Step: Joining Together for a Sustainable Future" Terry Gips is a widely published ecologist, agricultural economist, green business consultant, Natural Step instructor, speaker and author with more than 20 years experience in global environmental leadership, government policy, sustainable development, business management and consulting.

Gips is President of Sustainability Associates, which works with business, communities, government agencies, educational institutions and non profits to improve performance and strategic position, reduce costs, and achieve ecological soundness and social responsibility through leading edge sustainability thinking, eco-auditing, technical consulting, organizational learning, team building, public policy, strategic marketing, and capital formation.

7:00 p.m. Depart for The Lake Superior Big Top Chautauqua Concert "Riding the Wind"
* Meet at the Baldwin Student Center. Big Top Chautauqua's most popular house show, "Riding the Wind," is a compelling mixture of original music, drama and history, illuminated by hundreds of historical photographs, celebrating the history and beauty of Bayfield and the Apostle Islands. Lively songs and stories bring to life the days of a booming town in the northern woods of Wisconsin. Commissioned by the Apostle Islands Foundation of Arts and the Bayfield Heritage Association, Inc. Created by the Nelson-Ferris Concert Company. Songs by Warren Nelson.

Saturday, August 8

I Paddle Lake Superior
Go in a 36' long birch bark Montreal canoe through a section of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Ron Hobart from "The Spirit of the Voyageur" enacts trusted guide Louis Baron from the 1681-1682 La Salle Expedition. Louis is the self proclaimed king of the voyageurs and promises not only a fine paddle to the sweet chansons of the French fur trader and the telling of cleverly crafted lies but a visit to the Madeline Island Historical Museum and replica 17th century ice cream cones from "Grampa Tony's!"
Weather permitting (Conference fee does not include this optional activity) ($25)

II Peter's Field Station
Visit the Colleges Peter's Field Station, check out their low ropes course and finish the morning by paddling a section of the White River. The White is known for its eagle population, as an important artery in the fur trade and for its fine fishing. Some previous paddling experience is recommended.

III Accompany the Voyageur canoe
Using Sea Kayaks, go alongside the Voyageur canoe from the Village of Bayfield to Madeline Island and back (5 mile round trip). Previous kayak experience helpful but not required.

7:30 p.m. Les Fils du Voyageur
Les Fils du Voyageur is a men's acappella group performing French and English songs of the fur trade that were sung while paddlers were moving furs and trade goods across North America. Their enchanting and oft times haunting music will take people back to the ancient wilderness, early native traders and the front edge of economic expansion on this continent. Les Fils will also perform classic songs sung during the lumbering, mining and sailing eras that had such a huge impact on this northern part of Wisconsin. Come join in!

The National Alliance for Green Education

A consortium of small liberal arts colleges with environmental emphases, the National Alliance for Green Education encourages interdisciplinary education, holistic perspectives, and ecological literacy. The Alliance nurtures development of proactive community members capable of creating a sustainable balance between the changing needs of natural and social ecologies. Members include: Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio; College of the Atlantic, Bar Harbor, Maine; Goddard College, Plainfield, Vermont; The Naropa Institute, Boulder, Colorado; Northland College, Ashland, Wisconsin; Prescott College, Prescott, Arizona; Sterling College, Craftsbury Common, Vermont; Unity College, Unity, Maine; and Warren Wilson College, Asheville, North Carolina.
